THE HIPPODROME
On August 1, 1874, 10,000 people from all over northern France and Belgium attended the seven races scheduled duringof the first official meeting organized on the La Capelle “test” racecourse. The “great families” of the region have made the trip, and parade in princely carriages pulled by four horses. In the evening, the main street is illuminated by a double string of 3,000 Venetian lanterns, while the “half-moon” is lit by more than 2,000 colored glasses.
